Knowledge Modeling In Design - The MOKA Framework

چکیده

Design and engineering are knowledge intensive processes. Large amounts of different types of knowledge are needed in real world applications. An essential pre–requisite for the usage and re–use of this knowledge is an adequate modeling framework which describes the role or roles of each ’piece’ of knowledge in the overall context. The MOKA framework has been developed as a generic scheme for design knowledge modeling. It is based on a knowledge level theory of design and an accompanied design process theory. The design theory provides a semi–formal description of the main knowledge categories in design mediated by the three meta level predicates ’fulfills’, ’consistent’, and ’complete’ which describe the main aspects of design and guide the design process. The design process theory describes the interplay between synthesis and analysis as the main activities in design problem solving. The notion of elaboration is introduced as generalization of dynamic synthetic problem solving. Based on this theory we describe the MOKA framework for design knowledge modeling. Its main features are the usage of goals as essential modeling element connecting domain and problem solving knowledge and the explicit introduction of a strategic reasoning layer and its relation to domain and problem solving knowledge.

Interoperability of Knowledge Based Engineering Software

The design process of manufacturing goods like vehicles, airplanes, and spaceships is increasingly being driven by conflicting requirements. There is a need to shorten the product development time while performing more rigorous multidisciplinary analysis of increasingly complex systems. There is a need to involve a larger group of design partners while retaining core competencies within the des...

Reflecting on Backward Design for Knowledge Translation; Comment on “A Call for a Backward Design to Knowledge Translation”

In a recent Editorial for this journal, El-Jardali and Fadlallah proposed a new framework for Knowledge Translation (KT) in healthcare. Many such frameworks already exist; thus, new entrants to the field must be scrutinized in regard to their unique contributions to advancing understanding and practice. The El-Jardali and Fadlallah framework focuses on policy-level discussions, a relatively und...

Iranian TEFL Graduates’ Conceptions of Measurement Error in Research: A Genealogical Narrative Inquiry

The aim of this study is to investigate Iranian TEFL graduates’ conception of measurement error in research. Adopting a sequential explanatory multi-method strategy (Borg, 2009), the researchers analyzed causal and temporal relations in the research narratives elicited from 30 TEFL graduates. Gee’s (1986) framework for identifying narrative discourse units (lines, stanzas, and episodes) was ado...

Organizational Learning and Knowledge Spillover in Innovation Networks: Agent-Based Approach (Extending SKIN Framework)

In knowledge-based economy, knowledge has a public good and non-rivalry nature. Firms build their own knowledge stock not only by means of internal R&D and collaboration with partners, but also by means of previously spilled over knowledge of other firms and public research laboratories (such as universities). Firms based on their absorptive capacity, and level of intra-industry and extra-indus...
